A school counselor was arrested on multiple assault charges Friday after allegedly hitting a 10-year-old student in the face, police in Middleborough said.
Steven Adamec, 50, of Attleboro, was charged with assault and battery on a child with injury, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, threat to commit crime/solicitation of a crime, and assault and battery on a person with an intellectual disability, police said.
Around 3:45 p.m., police went to READS Collaborative, a nonprofit that serves a number of school districts in southeastern Massachusetts, after receiving a report that an adjustment counselor had gotten into an argument with a student.

“Police subsequently determined that Adamec dragged the student by the arm and pushed him into a door while escorting him out of a classroom,” police said. “Adamec then used his left hand to strike the student across the side of their face.”
In a letter to families, executive director Dina Medeiros said the staff member no longer works at the school.
“I want to assure you that this individual’s actions are not representative of the caring and compassionate READS staff,” she wrote.
Adamec was arraigned in Wareham District Court, where he pleaded not guilty, according to legal filings. His next court date is scheduled for Jan. 26.
